Berlin Gives Prize to Gay Film


The Berlin Film Festival’s gay cinema strand in its 25th year has awarded its top prize to Marco Berger’s movie Ausente (Absent). The film is about a gay teen who lusts for his coach and finds ways to spend time with him including a night which brings serious repercussions afterward. We see the youth as a sexual predator.The statement issued says “The film’s unique combination of homoerotic desire, suspense and dramatic tension reflects the director’s keen understanding of genre conventions and cinematic language. As the most intriguing, cutting-edge film in the selection, the jury considers that Ausente celebrates the spirit of the Teddy Award.”
