“Erotikus: A History of the Gay Movie”

A Documentary on Porn

Amos Lassen

“Erotikus” is a movie I never expected to see on DVD. I remember seeing it years ago on VHS and found it shocking then but that was before the proliferation of gay porn. The documentary tells of the birth, maturation and spread of gay porn and shows how it gained popularity.

“Erotikus” starts with the evolution of physique magazines (which seem so tame now) of the ‘50s to the appearance of the early muscle movies in which men appeared in g-strings. These innocent body building films gave way to the hard core pornography that exists today. (Compare this to the uproar that Lucy and Desi slept in the same bed on TV and the uproar that ensued).

The film uses a historical approach from the suggestive to the no holes barred and explicitness of modern gay porn of the 70s which openly showed both oral and anal sex. Fred Halsted recounts his contribution to the world of gay porn which is interesting and humorous but doesn’t add much to the exploration of how the popularity of porn came about and how video revolutionized the industry.

What is included in the film; however, are some wonderful rare clips. There are scenes from the first full length gay porn feature, “The Collection”. There is also footage of the court case held in the 1960’s of the court case that gave the OK to make porn and to keep it legal. Some of the footage is faded but it is important if we want to know our history. Whether we like it or want to admit it, the rise of gay porn did aid in much of the liberation of gays. Almost all of it is dated but that is what makes it so valuable. Some of this may have been lost forever. Some of the clips included come from “Bolero”, “L.A. Plays Itself”, “Confessions of a Male Groupie” and others. (What a change the names have taken—some of the new videos have titles like “Forest Rump”, “Shaving Ryan’s Privates” and “Bareback Mountain”). It seems fair to say we have come a long way.

If you love porn, this film is a must have. Otherwise it is a movie that deals with our past and that makes it important. I marveled at some of what I saw but I certainly don’t yearn for the god old days.  I am glad we have come so far.

And here is a bald-faced plug—if you like porn and live in the Little Rock area, take a look at Twisted Entertainment. It has almost all of the porn ever made and you can rent movies there to fill your appetite. Tell Dennis, the owner, that Amos sent you.
