“A Gay in the Life: A Compilation of Saints and Sinners in Gay Hstory”

McHugh, Erin. “A Gay in the Life: A Compilation of Saints and Sinners in Gay History”, Alyson, 2007.

Everything (Almost) that You Need to Know

Amos Lassen

Alyson’s “The Portable Queer” is an ideal little set of books that fit in your pocket and provide you with instant information. “A Gay in the Life” tells us about “the gays in our lives” and in its brief 137 pages it is a who is and who was who in gay life. Everyone seems to be here—celebrities, activists, historical figures and modern day heroes as well as some ordinary people who have done what was necessary for us to get the rights we have. There are also those that are working for us right now.

Conveniently divided into seven categories—the arts, celebrities, politics, gay activists, history makers, the sporting life, and ordinary heroes, the book is easy to use and all is presented in a concise yet readable way. It’s a great addition to our lives.
